Thank you for being here. Tonight I want to talk about something you already do every single day, without ever thinking about it… listening to sound. Humming in the shower. A song that gives you chills. The hum of a lullaby. We tend to treat music as entertainment — something nice, but not serious. The science tells a different story. Sound reaches deep into the body: the brain, the heart, the nervous system. And we can now measure, precisely, how. So let’s talk about the sound body — what music, humming, and singing actually do to you.
The power was never in a magic number.
Maybe you’ve seen the videos online — the ones promising that one special healing frequency will repair your cells, or melt your stress away. I looked hard at that research. And here’s the honest verdict… it was never about a magic number. The real, repeatable effects — the ones that show up when scientists actually measure them — come from something simpler, and far better studied. Sound. Rhythm. And the act of making it yourself. That’s the good news — what’s real turns out to be more useful than what’s hyped. And it shows up in three places: your brain, your body, and your voice.
Three places sound shows up.
So here’s our map for tonight. First, the brain — how music moves through reward, mood, memory, and even movement. Second, the clinic — where this shows up in real medicine, from operating rooms, to stroke wards, to the intensive care unit for newborns. And third — my favorite — your own voice. Humming, breathing, chanting, singing… physiology you can drive yourself, for free, starting tonight. Let’s begin in the brain.
Music hits the brain’s reward system.
Have you ever felt a literal shiver down your spine, at the peak moment of a song? That’s a musical chill — and it is not just in your head. Well… it is in your head, but in a very specific way. Researchers put people inside brain scanners and watched them release dopamine — the same reward chemical tied to food and other pleasures — in response to their favorite music. And here’s the beautiful part. One region lit up in anticipation, as the music built toward the peak… and a second fired at the exact instant of the chill. Craving, and reward — the brain’s core pleasure circuitry, playing right along with the music.
Music measurably lowers pain.
Let’s move from pleasure, to pain. Researchers pooled seventy-three separate randomized trials of adults having surgery, where some patients listened to music. The results were remarkably consistent. Less pain afterward. Lower use of opioid painkillers. Higher satisfaction with their care. And this held even when the music played while patients were under general anaesthesia — fully unconscious. Now, I’ll be honest: reviewers call the effect real, but modest. This isn’t a replacement for medicine. But as a cheap, safe add-on that takes the edge off? That is a genuine win.
It calms anxiety.
If there’s one effect with the strongest evidence in this entire field, it’s this one — music calms anxiety. Across eighty-one randomized surgical trials, music, before and during procedures, consistently brought patients’ anxiety down. And in cancer care, pooling seventeen trials, music lowered anxiety by nearly eight points on a standard clinical scale. Different settings. Different patients. The same direction, again, and again. When the evidence lines up like that… you can trust it.
Music therapy lifts mood.
Now a subtle, but important, distinction. A major review found that adding music therapy — active sessions, guided by a trained therapist — to someone’s usual treatment, improved their depression symptoms more than usual treatment alone. It also eased anxiety, and helped people function day to day. But notice the word… therapy. This is something you do — playing, moving, engaging — not just a playlist you press play on. The taking part is part of the medicine.
Familiar music reaches memory.
Here’s one that gets me every time. Someone with advanced dementia may not recognize their own children… and yet light up, word for word, the moment a song from their youth begins. Why? Brain imaging gives us an answer: our long-term musical memory is stored in regions that Alzheimer’s tends to spare, until very late. So the song can still get through. And in the clinic, music-based sessions reduce depression, and ease distress, in dementia care. It’s one of the most humane, lowest-cost tools we have — a doorway, when other doors have closed.
A steady beat helps people walk again.
Let’s talk about rhythm, as rehabilitation. When someone is relearning to walk after a stroke, giving them a steady beat to step to — a technique called rhythmic auditory stimulation — meaningfully improves their walking speed, their step rate, and their stride length. And the results are consistent across studies. In Parkinson’s disease, a beat helps too — especially a brisk one — though the effect is smaller, and varies from person to person. The idea is elegant: the beat becomes an external clock, for a motor system that’s lost its own. Rhythm, quite literally, helps people walk.
Even the tiniest patients settle to sound.
And it reaches the very youngest among us. In neonatal intensive care, live music, and a parent’s singing, are used to soothe premature babies. A careful review found a small but reliable effect — a gentle drop of about four beats per minute in the baby’s heart rate, after the intervention. Let me be fair: the reviews disagree about breathing and oxygen levels. The clearest signal is that calming of the heart. But think about what that means. From the very first days of life — before language, before understanding — the nervous system already answers to soothing sound.
It makes hard effort feel easier.
Let’s lighten it up. The gym. The largest review of music in exercise and sport gathered a hundred and thirty-nine studies — around thirty-six hundred people. The findings were modest, but real. Music makes the effort feel more positive. It makes the same workload feel easier. And it gives a small boost to actual performance, and efficiency. Now — you may have heard that music improves performance by fifteen percent. That’s a media headline, not the science. The real effect is smaller. And the feels-easier benefit fades once you’re truly gasping, at maximum intensity. Still — music won’t rewrite your fitness, but it’s a real training partner.
The instrument you already own.
So far, you’ve been on the receiving end. The listener. But here’s where it gets personal. The most powerful instrument in this room… is the one you were born with. Your own voice. Humming. Slow breathing. Chanting. Singing. These aren’t just expression — they’re physiology you can control. Let me show you what happens when you make the sound yourself.
Humming floods your nose with nitric oxide.
Start with something almost absurdly simple. Humming. A classic study found that humming increases the nitric oxide in your nasal passages roughly fifteen-fold, compared to quiet breathing. The vibration flushes the gas out of your sinuses. And nitric oxide matters — it widens blood vessels, a discovery that won a Nobel Prize, and it helps keep your sinuses sterile. But let me keep myself honest. A twenty twenty-four trial confirmed the nitric-oxide surge is real… and then found it did not improve thinking, or memory. More gas is not the same thing as a proven health boost. A real, measurable body change — with benefits that are plausible, but not yet proven. That’s an honest place to stand.
Slow, sustained sound tunes the heart.
So why does chanting feel so calming? It turns out that chanting, mantra, and even reciting the rosary, all do the same physical thing — they slow your breathing to around six breaths per minute. And that number is special — not for mystical reasons, but for mechanical ones. It’s roughly the rate at which your heart-rate control, and your blood-pressure reflexes, resonate most strongly. Researchers watched slow, sustained vocal breathing sharpen those reflexes — and, in people with high blood pressure, bring that pressure down. So the calm you feel when you chant? That’s not your imagination. That’s your own physiology… settling.
Singing together syncs your bodies.
And when we sing together, something remarkable happens. Researchers found that when a choir sings, the singers’ heart rhythms begin to rise and fall in time with one another — synchronized by their shared breathing. Singing also changes body chemistry in ways that simply listening does not. It raised a key immune antibody in the singers’ saliva — while passive listening did not. And a single choir session lowered stress hormones, and lifted mood… though that last piece is still early evidence. Singing with other people is a kind of social medicine — syncing your hearts, and nudging stress and immunity in the right direction.
Making music together bonds us.
And the bonding goes deeper still. Actively performing music — not just hearing it — raises people’s pain thresholds. That’s a fingerprint of your body’s own endorphins, at work. And it builds real social closeness between the players. In one program, ten weeks of group drumming cut participants’ depression by thirty-eight percent, and anxiety by twenty — and shifted their immune markers toward a calmer, anti-inflammatory state. Gains that were still holding, months later. Making music with other people is connection you can feel — in your chemistry, and in your bones.
How solid is the evidence, really?
So let me be straight with you, about how solid all of this really is. Some of it is well established — the pain and anxiety relief around surgery, the dopamine reward response, rhythm for stroke recovery. You can lean on those. Some of it is promising, but still early — the humming and nitric oxide, singing’s effects on stress and immunity, slow breathing for blood pressure, drumming for mood. Watch this space. And the fair caveats: you can’t hide music from a person in a study, so expectation always plays a role. The effects are usually modest. And this is an add-on — not a cure. The honest headline? Sound and music are real, low-risk medicine, for how we feel and function. Just… not a miracle.
